Ordering FAQ's

How long will my proofs be online?

At least one year. As our database grows, we do remove older proofs from the site to reduce storage requirements. HOWEVER, WE KEEP THE SOURCE IMAGES PERMANENTLY, so you can still order images even if they have been removed from the site. We just need the proof numbers you want. If you have lost the image numbers, we will do our best to locate what you are looking for. Just call us!

Can you crop my photo?

We custom crop every image we enlarge for you. We use our best judgement to maximize horse and rider level in the center of the image, leaving just enough border to allow for framing.

If you want special cropping, for example, cropping a horizontal image to a vertical format, or extra tilt on a saddle seat shot, please let us know exactly what you want. We can also crop to non-standard sizes if needed. If you wish, print out your proofs, draw the crop lines you want, and mail it to us.

What about "red-eye" from the flash?

We always remove eye-shine when printing enlargements, at no additional charge. We also dust-spot and remove manure piles (on the photo, that is!) at no charge.

My proof looks a little too light/too dark. Can you fix it?

All reprints are corrected for exposure and color balance.

My horse's ears aren't up!

Sometimes in spite of our best efforts, a tired horse just won't smile for the camera.... but we can retouch your photo digitally to put his ears up, as well as correct other cosmetic problems like bit slobber, etc. What a difference it can make in a photo! There is an additional one-time charge of $0.00 per retouched image. (Please see our digital retouching page for examples of what else can be done.) Once we have retouched your image, it is saved on disk so that you can re-order additional copies any time at the regular print prices.

Cool! Can you fix his cow hocks, too?

Whoa! We're delighted to correct purely cosmetic problems to give you a more pleasing photograph, but WE DO NOT CORRECT CONFORMATION FLAWS OR ALTER A HORSE'S COLORATION in order to make a horse appear closer to breed standard than it actually is. We believe digital technology must be used very conscientiously and ethically in an industry where our photographs are frequently used for advertising.

Can you e-mail an image to a magazine for use in an ad?

Usually. These days, most magazines are happy to work with electronic images. If your image size is not too large, and the magazine will accept a jpeg, we will be happy to do so. The fee is $40.00 per image.

May I scan photos I order to e-mail or put on a website?

No. All of our images are copyrighted and as such are protected by copyright law. No scanning or reproduction of any kind is allowed without our express permission. The only exception to this rule is that you may submit our photos to a magazine for the purpose of advertising your horse or farm.

BUT, we will be happy to provide you with an excellent quality jpeg image for your use on a website or to e-mail. We will size the image according to your specifications and optimize it for the best possible appearance and fast load time on the web. The fee is only $30.00 - a steal when you consider that a high-quality image of your horse is out there for the entire world to see.

Can I buy my images on a CD?

Yes. The price is $75.00 for a 300 dpi 8x10 image on CD, cropped & color balanced just as we would do for a print. When you purchase an image on CD, you are allowed to reproduce it for any advertising purposes related to your horses or farm, or for personal use. Jay Goss Photography retains the copyright on the image. Usage restrictions: You must give a Jay Goss Photography a photo credit whenever using the image in a publication; you may NOT use one of our images for any commercial advertising not directly related to your horse business; and you may NOT resell our image to any third party.

Why don't I have more photos?

First, let us assure you that we make every effort to take several photos of everyone. However, there are often hundreds of riders, and only one photographer!

So, occasionally an exhibitor may not get any photos, or not as many as they hoped for. This can happen for many reasons having to do with show ring logistics. Sometimes there simply is not enough time, if a judge is running classes quickly, to photograph everyone during the trot portions of the class. (Normally show photographers only shoot at trot, except in specialty classes like jumping, reining, costume, etc.) Sometimes the exhibitor gets boxed in on the rail. Sometimes the horse will break or toss its head just when he was about to be photographed. And sometimes we will discard images if we feel they are unflattering to the horse or rider, for example if the phase of stride is not ideal, or the horse or rider is making an obvious mistake.

If you are in dire need of photographs, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TALK TO JAY during the show. He will do his best to get you some great images.

Can I still order photos from shows several years ago?

YES! We have thousands of negatives from horseshows all the way back to 1989. We'll be happy to retrieve your old images from our archives.
